The music video starts off depicting a scene of a place which looks similar to an industrial wasteland. In the midst of it, is a tall tower which extends beyond clouds. The tower is where Feel Good Inc. is established.

Inside the tower, there are people lying on the floor. Most of the characters look dazed and inactive during the scene. Meanwhile, the band members 2-D, Murdoc and Russel can be seen performing in front of the numbed crowd. While it is unclear as to why the crowd appears so dead in the video, the possible reason behind it might be the influence of s*x, dr*gs or other forms of intoxications.

Feel Good Inc. could be possibly thought of as an industry which provides a platform where people entertain themselves. 2-D the singer is performing in front of the crowd. He is tired as he doesn’t get time to sleep probably cause he is made to perform all the time.

Meanwhile, as he looks out the window he sees Noodle playing the guitar sitting on a landmass floating across the sky. The windmill on the landmass is probably enabling it to fly in the sky. Noodle spoke about windmill being a keyword that added to the lyrical imagery and how it reminded her of the countryside.

I remember the beginning of the formation of ‘Feel Good. Inc.’ quite clearly. I had a beat that was a little bit ’80s, very upbeat. But maybe halfway through, my attention wandered. I played something more acoustic, just something that reminded me of the countryside. So I wrote down some keywords to help with the lyrical imagery. ‘Windmill’ was one of them. It was a trigger to symbolize a different time and also a reference to the ‘dark, satanic mills’ that William Blake wrote about in his verse of ‘Jerusalem.’ I remember that it all started when I was reading the ingredients off the back of a [potato chip] packet.

Noodle

The windmill and the floating landmass symbolizes the countryside that 2-D is yearning for. So, 2-D is looking at noodle probably thinking about how he could be free like her since he feels trapped inside the industry where the officials forcefully make him perform all the time. As suggested by the lyrics ” Play these ponies at the track It’s my chocolate attack”, the ponies symbolize the band playing and chocolate attack refers to the tactics through which these officials try to keep people who hooked on to music or other forms of entertainment that Feel Good Inc. has to offer.

Meaning

So, the song reflects several things worth pondering upon. It talks about how the society is moving towards urbanization without thinking about what the consequences will be in the long run. The dark satanic mills that Noodle talked about refer to industrialization which has bad repercussions on the environment. It talks about how people lived happily when industrialization was not prominent and things were simpler referring to the countryside.

Also, it shows the society’s dependence on several forms of entertainment like dr*gs, s*x, etc and how some authorities try to control people using these mediums behind closed doors.

So, this is my interpretation of the song Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz.
